Step Two - Intake and Eligibility

If assistance is desired, intake is the entry point to PDD Edmonton for supports and services. Intake includes:

  • Information and referral
  • Assessment of eligibility
  • Intake processing

Calls are received from various referral sources including: individuals with disabilities, parents, guardians, teachers, social workers, doctors and other concerned citizens. Intake coordinators ensure that the individual who may receive services is in agreement with the referral. Sometimes other people are involved in making this decision (i.e., guardians, parents, etc.).

On July 1, 2009, a new PDD Eligibility regulation came into effect in Alberta . Individuals who apply to the PDD program as of August 1, 2009, will be assessed for eligibility under the new regulation. The regulation is consistent with the PDD program's current eligibility policy and defines what constitutes a significant limitation.

Eligibility for supports from the PDD program is not based on a person's diagnosis, such as autism or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).

Eligibility is based on significant limitations in two areas: intellectual capacity and adaptive skills (daily living skills).

  • For intellectual capacity it will be a full-scale IQ of 70 or below.
  • For adaptive skills, an inventory of 24 typical daily living skills has been developed. Significant limitation in adaptive skills will be defined by the need for help to perform six or more of these skills, at a level compared with someone who is not disabled. Daily Living Skills

Both must have existed prior to the age of 18.

The eligibility regulation will help PDD to improve consistency in decision-making, clarify the mandate of the program and increase its efficiency and effectiveness.

This new regulation will not affect individuals currently receiving supports from the PDD program.

Eligibility Fact Sheet

If an individual is ineligible for PDD services, intake coordinators provide referrals and information on other programs and services that may be more appropriate. If questions arise concerning eligibility, intake coordinators ask for professionally documented information that identifies the individual's disability.

Community support coordinators are assigned once eligibility is determined.
