May 2005 Web Letter
The middle of April saw the
warmer days start and the first thing we heard was, “can we
drum outside?” And drum they did. Our new neighbors were
undoubtedly wondering what was going on. Some even came
outside to watch and listen.
Inside the building we have
started doing a little more decorating. New motifs are
starting to emerge and add to the character of our area. The
windows are certainly looking bright thanks to our members
making some tremendous art for them. Good job.
We are on the lookout for
powwows, round dances and celebrations. If you hear of any,
please let us know as soon as you can to allow for
transportation and shift scheduling.
We are also starting to prepare
for our annual trip to Bowden Penitentiary to visit with those
at the Native Brotherhood Organization. Every year on
Aboriginal week (June 19-25) we are invited for a day- long
powwow. PDD board members and Michener executives join our
group for a day of dancing, singing and feasting. It has
become one of our favorite days and we are very much looking
forward to attending.
It will be down to the river
for us in May. We will be collecting some natural materials
for future activities. We will also take our hand drums and
doing some drumming and singing while we are there. Should be
fun.
We will also be traveling over
to the Relax Crew. They have asked us to come over and show
off those drumming skills we have been bragging about. The
group has never performed in public before, so this should be
interesting.
Enjoy the beautiful weather.
