Who We Are

PDD Central's First Nations Circle of Friends group provides opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities to experience a variety of cultural and heritage activities. Some of these individuals have lacked opportunities to become involved with their aboriginal background as they often live away from their families.

This group's mission is to close that cultural gap through:

  • Staff education/awareness

  • Community resources

  • Family connections

First Nations Circle of Friends is open to all aboriginal adult individuals with developmental disabilities who are from a variety of aboriginal cultures. We promote individualized support. Our activities include:

  • Community events

  • Crafts

  • Cultural activities

  • Cultural awareness programs

Our group is open to prospective members from Red Deer and area. Although at present we can't accept children as members, we do hold public events and children are welcome to attend. Membership can be obtained by:

  • Being of aboriginal background

  • Being 18 years of age or older

  • Having a support person with you

Members receive:

  • Full quality experiences

  • Full quality involvement

How We're Different

This group is different from any other First Nations organization in the community. We adapt and provide cultural activities based on the individual's mental and physical abilities. This is accomplished through sight, sound, taste, touch and smell.

Our cultural activities include:

  • Drum making

  • Feasts

  • Round dances

  • Sweat lodges

  • Drumming and dancing

  • Smudging

  • Making dream catchers

  • Bannock making

  • Moose hair tufting

  • Ornamental tepee crafts

  • Medicine wheels

  • Guests

  • Culture camps

  • Pow wows

We host annual First Nations gatherings of family and friends. Activities at these gatherings include:

  • Face painting

  • Dancing

  • Making and eating bannock and herbal tea

  • Raising a tepee

  • Traditional drumming and singing

  • Special guests

  • Multicultural Day
