Moving Ahead Project

Moving Ahead: It's My Life project is the action phase of a process to:

  • Consult with each individual supported at Michener Services and his or her family, friends and guardian to decide where the person wants to live;
  • Help those who want to live elsewhere to do so;
  • Ensure that each individual who wishes to remain at Michener has appropriate accessible accommodation that meets current standards of safety, privacy, accessibility, and comfort;
  • Explore options with the David Thompson Health Region for future provision of health care services for individuals living at Michener; and
  • Consolidate accommodation and services at Michener onto the facility's south site before the end of the decade.

The project is named Moving Ahead: It's My Life to reflect its emphasis on allowing individuals, with the advice and consent of their guardians, to decide whether they wish to live on the South Site of Michener Services or move to another community. They will also be the primary source for identifying supports and services they require.

The project emerged from a goal included in the PDD Central Alberta Community Board 2005-2008 Business Plan and is to continue through the 2008/09 period.

Here are project update reports:

A key part of the Moving Ahead - It's My Life project involves working with a number of partners and stakeholders. On January 23, 2006 the David Thompson Health Authority announced plans to develop a Community of Care for seniors on 16 acres of vacant land on Michener's south site. DTHR has agreed to work with PDD to develop accommodations in Phase I of the project for 20 individuals who currently live at Michener and to provide space for about 50 individuals in Phase II.
