Building Community Capacity (2006-07)

In 2003, an important new initiative was started in the overall development of supports for persons with developmental disabilities in Alberta.

The Building Community Capacity initiative was established to encourage local communities to enhance their capacity to fully include individuals with developmental disabilities. Funding was set aside to enable each PDD Community Board to develop projects in support of this overall direction.

Since 2003, the PDD Central Region Community Board has provided funding to over 30 projects in Central Alberta.

The Board also continues to invite individuals and groups to submit Letters of Intent for projects in Central Alberta that are aimed at:

  • Enhancing community capacity to include and support adults with developmental disabilities
  • Increasing community awareness and understanding of the partnerships and opportunities available to build inclusive communities

A total of $384,000 has been set aside in 2006-07 in Central Alberta for this initiative.

Letters of Intent continue to be welcome from individuals and groups across Central Alberta interested in ' creating an Alberta where adults with developmental disabilities are included in community life '.

Here is information about the initiative and the criteria associated with it.

In September 2006 the PDD Central Region Community Board asked for an assessment of what had been achieved through the BCC initiative since its beginning. In November 2006 the following information was presented to the Board.

Building Community Capacity is expected to continue into the future as a key strategy in 'creating an Alberta where adults with developmental disabilities are included in community life '.

Further information about projects undertaken in Central Alberta is listed below.
