In 2001, PDD
funded five projects. An abstract is provided for each,
click on the links below to read the full report.
Overview of the project: Participants of the Vegreville
Community Council, through interviews in the Northeast
and Central regions, identified a number of issues that
limited the council’s ability to function at an optimal
level of efficiency. Two recommendations for further development
included a) the need for the Community Councils to evaluate
themselves by reassessing their roles, priorities and goals,
and b) strategize on how to inform the whole community
about the existence of the Community Councils. The final report
is available as a PDF document:

Overview of the project: A total of 30 Kainaiwa persons
with developmental disabilities and their guardians/caregivers
participated in a five-month research project led by the
Alberta Association of Rehabilitation Centres and Treaty
7 Committee for Full Citizenship. The findings identified
many issues and obstacles faced by Kainaiwa persons with
developmental disabilities and identified the growing frustration
of participants at the slow progress and lack of response
to their needs. The final reports are now available:

Overview of the project: This
project documents the stories of self-advocates in their
path to becoming active citizens
in their communities by participating in activities including
rallies, board meetings, community discussions, and planning
a conference (Self Advocacy Summit). These activities have
been captured on film in order to promote self-advocacy
for people with developmental disabilities in Alberta. The
video is available from the Calgary SCOPE Society. Contact
Denise Young at 403-509-0200 to request a copy of the video.

Overview of the project: A workshop was developed by and
for people with developmental disabilities to learn about
human rights, and skills and strategies for teaching others
about their rights. Individuals will complete training
workshops to become project assistants and will then be
able to help facilitate peer training in their communities.

Overview of the project: This project included an in-depth
literature review to explore how to record the life stories
of people with developmental disabilities, including information
from the story-telling workshop (part of Calgary SCOPE
Society’s Arts and Culture Program). Individuals
have contributed their life stories to the project. These
stories will be published in a booklet with hopes to eventually
put them on film.
