In the popular movie, Radio, a young man with a developmental disability
transforms a whole community through his gifts of perseverance, love, and unconditional
acceptance of others. The power of these gifts is nicely summed up by Radio’s
friend and mentor who says, “Radio treats everyone all of the time the way
most of us wish we could treat each other some of the time.”
Everywhere I go within PDD, I meet friendly, outgoing, and accepting people
eagerly extending a hand in friendship. They seek only goodwill and positive
connection in return. Their generosity of spirit compels them to share with
others who are open to receiving what they have to offer. What capabilities
such individuals may lack in other areas, they frequently display in abundance
in the matters that give richness and meaning to life and relationships.
At a time when society seeks desperately to find ways to combat the devastating
effects of personal alienation and unfulfilled lives, the gifts offered by
individuals with developmental disabilities can be powerful ways to make positive
changes in community values and attitudes.
